Solar Battery Storage in Ipswich and Suffolk
Solar panel installations across Suffolk and north Essex have grown quickly in recent years, driven by rising energy bills and a growing wish for energy independence. For many homeowners, solar panels are a meaningful step towards relying less on the grid. There is one piece of the puzzle that decides how much you actually save.
Without a way to store the electricity your panels generate, much of that energy goes unused. Battery storage changes that. It turns a solar installation from a daytime energy source into a round the clock power solution, and it is usually what decides whether a solar system delivers what the homeowner expected.
Ecocare Electrical install solar PV and battery storage across Ipswich, Colchester, Felixstowe and Bury St Edmunds. We are NICEIC approved and we survey every property before we quote.
Battery storage is currently zero rated for VAT
This matters and it is easy to miss. Battery storage installations in the UK currently carry no VAT. That applies whether the battery goes in alongside new panels or is retrofitted to a system you already have.
From 1 April 2027 the rate returns to the reduced rate, so installations completed before then avoid it.
The date that counts is when the installation is finished, not when you book it, so it is worth allowing time for the work itself rather than leaving it to the last few weeks.
What is solar battery storage and how does it work?
A solar battery captures the surplus electricity your panels generate and stores it for later. Rather than exporting unused energy to the grid, the battery holds it so your household can draw on it in the evening, overnight, or on a dull day.
A standard solar PV system converts sunlight into electricity in real time. When your panels produce more than your home is using, that surplus normally goes to the grid. With a battery in the system, it is stored instead.
The distinction matters. Using energy as it is generated is efficient, but very few households can line up all their consumption with peak solar hours. Storage bridges that gap.
Why do solar panels alone not always maximise savings?
Panels generate most of their electricity in daylight, typically between late morning and mid afternoon. Most households use the bulk of their energy in the evening, when lights, cooking and heating are on.
That mismatch is one of the most common reasons homeowners do not see the savings they expected from solar. Without storage, surplus daytime electricity is exported to the grid, usually at a lower rate than you pay to import it back when you need it.
Battery storage addresses this directly. You keep the electricity you generate during the day and use it at peak times rather than buying it from your supplier.
What are the main benefits for Suffolk homeowners?
Greater energy independence. Relying less on suppliers gives you more control over your costs as grid prices move.
Better use of what you generate. Instead of exporting surplus at a low export rate, you consume more of your own electricity, which improves the return on the whole installation.
Protection against rising prices. Drawing on stored energy at peak times reduces your exposure to variable costs.
Backup power. Certain systems, properly configured, can keep supplying your home during a power cut.
These compound over time. The more of your own electricity you use, the faster the system pays for itself.
Which equipment do we install?
We fit JA Solar panels alongside Fox ESS battery storage. Both are well established, widely supported in the UK, and carry manufacturer warranties we are happy to stand behind.
Using equipment we install regularly matters more than it sounds. It means we know how the inverter and battery behave together, we can size the system properly, and we are not learning an unfamiliar product on your roof.
Is battery storage right for every property?
It suits many homes but it is not a universal answer, and we would rather tell you that before you commit.
Consumption habits matter most. Properties with higher evening and overnight use benefit most, because there is real demand for the stored electricity. A household that uses most of its energy in daylight may see less from it.
Installation space matters too. Batteries need somewhere suitable, usually a garage or utility room, and the installation has to meet current electrical regulations.
So do your future plans. If you are thinking about an EV charger or expect your consumption to grow, the system can be sized for that from the start.
Why plan solar and storage together?
One of the more important decisions is whether to design your solar and storage together rather than treating the battery as something to bolt on later.
Designing both at once lets us optimise the whole configuration. Panel orientation, inverter capacity and battery size all affect how the system performs, and when they are designed together the result is more efficient and better value.
Retrofitting a battery to existing solar is perfectly possible and we do it often. It can simply involve extra cost and compatibility checks that would not have come up with an integrated design.
Book a free survey
We survey solar and battery installations free of charge, with no obligation. That means someone comes out, looks at your board, your roof and where a battery could safely go, and gives you a proper figure rather than a guess from a photograph.
Panels generate electricity. Storage makes sure you use it. Together they make a system that genuinely cuts bills and protects you against an unpredictable energy market.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I pay VAT on solar battery storage?
No. Battery storage installations in the UK are currently zero rated for VAT, whether fitted with new panels or retrofitted to an existing system. From 1 April 2027 the rate returns to the reduced rate, so installations completed before then avoid it. The date that counts is when the work is completed rather than when it is booked.
How much does a solar battery storage system cost?
Cost depends on the capacity of the battery, the equipment chosen and the complexity of the installation, including whether your existing consumer unit needs upgrading. We survey free of charge and give you a firm figure rather than a range, because a photograph cannot tell us what is behind your board.
Can I add battery storage to an existing solar panel system?
Yes. Storage can be retrofitted to most existing solar PV systems. Compatibility with your current inverter and configuration needs checking first, which is part of what the survey covers.
How long does a solar battery last?
Most modern solar batteries are designed to last between 10 and 15 years, and manufacturers typically offer warranties of around 10 years. Performance reduces gradually over time, which is worth factoring into any long term calculation.
Will battery storage work during a power cut?
Not automatically. Standard systems stay connected to the grid and shut down during an outage for safety. Systems with blackout protection, sometimes called islanding, can keep supplying your home, but this must be specified at the design stage rather than added afterwards.
